olfactory system
Acronym: OSY
The term olfactory system (OSY) refers to a histologically and functionally defined set of sensory structures involved in the processing of oderant information and the sense of smell ( Yilmazer-Hanke-2012, Buck-2013 ). It is composed of olfactory receptors (OLR), main olfactory nerves (1n) and accessory olfactory nerves (1na), main olfactory bulbs (MOB) and accessory olfactory bulbs (AOB), olfactory tracts (oltr), anterior olfactory nucleus (AON) and olfactory cortex (OLC). Some combination of its component structures is present in the human ( Buck-2013 ), macaque ( Price-1990 ), rat ( Swanson-2004 ) and mouse ( AMBA-2024 ). While the locations, relative sizes and functionality of structures is quite different in primates and rodents, the connectivity is the same. Final 27 Dec 2024.
