The term primary sensory areas refers to those areas of the cerebral cortex that receive input from subcortical nuclei related to specific sensory modalities. They include the primary somatosensory cortex, the primary visual area, the primary auditory cortex, the olfactory cortex and the gustatory cortex ( Carpenter-1983 ).
