The term lamina IX refers to a number of slender gray columns identified by cytoarchitecture in the spinal central gray. They are embedded in lamina VIII and in the lateral portion of lamina VII of the anterior gray column. In cross sections of the spinal cord they appear as islands of large cells distributed within the other laminas ( Carpenter-1983 ).
