The term polar type cortex is a cytoarchitecturally defined term that refers to cerebral cortex characterized by its thinness but which has a well developed internal granular layer (IV) and external granular layer (II), both of which contain large populations of cells. This type of cortex is found in the frontal pole, the temporal pole and the occipital pole of the cerebral cortex ( Carpenter-1983 ).
