The term lemniscal system refers to the long ascending sensory pathways located lateral to the reticular formation of the brainstem. They include the medial lemniscus of the midbrain, the medial lemniscus of the pons, the medial lemniscus of the medulla, the lateral lemniscus, the spinothalamic tract, the dorsal trigeminal tract, the ventral trigeminal tract and the spinal trigeminal tract ( Carpenter-1983 ).
