The term nucleus z refers to a group of cells adjacent to the solitary nucleus in the rat ( Swanson-1998 ) or surrounded by it in the mouse ( Hof-2000 ). In the functional model of central nervous system organization it is classified as part of the subcortical somatosensory system ( Swanson-2004 ) (see Models Where It Appears below).
