inferior occipital gyrus (IOG)

The term inferior occipital gyrus (IOG) refers to the most ventral of the human occipital gyri (OGY) defined on the basis of topology ( Duvernoy-1992 ). It is listed in the human glossaries of Mai-1997 and of Talairach-1988, where it is annotated: "the exact identification... is often difficult." Neither author labels it in atlas illustrations of the human occipital lobe (OLB). In the macaque it is defined as the portion of the OLB bounded laterally by the inferior occipital sulcus, medially by the occipitotemporal sulcus and posteriorly by the inferior calcarine fissure ( Martin-2000 ). It has no topological equivalent in the smooth cerebral cortex of the rat or mouse ( NeuroNames-2012 ).

Structural CNS Model - Macaque

Brain structures of the macaque are illustrated in BrainInfo’s NeuroMaps macaque brain atlas. Structures are grouped by proximity in a hierarchy corresponding to the central nervous system hierarchy of NeuroNames ( Bowden-1995 Martin-2000 ). Structures in the NeuroMaps atlas are based on the segmentation of an MRI of the brain of a 3-year old male rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta).
