subiculum (SUB)

The term subiculum refers to one of three parts of the histologically and functionally defined hippocampal complex in the hippocampus of the limbic lobe ( Stephan-1975 ).. It is found in the human ( Insausti-2012 ), macaque ( Paxinos-2009a ), rat ( Swanson-2004 ) and mouse ( Hof-2000 ). The other components of the hippocampal complex are the dentate gyrus and the CA fields. The subiculum is located between the CA1 field and, in the human and macaque, the more lateral presubiculum of the mediial posterior parahippocampal cortex ( Glasser-2016 ). In the rat and mouse it is bounded dorsomedially on the mesial surface of the cerebral hemisphere by the presubiculum .Updated 27 May 2024.
